Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in Fuerteventura's crystal-clear Atlantic waters is one of the island's most accessible and rewarding outdoor activities. Here's everything you need to get on the water.
Why SUP in Fuerteventura?
Stand-up paddleboarding has emerged as one of the fastest-growing watersports globally, and Fuerteventura is an ideal location for it. The island has the full range of SUP environments within a small area: sheltered harbour water for beginners, calm lagoons for yoga and relaxation paddling, open coastal routes for touring, and even small surf for those wanting to transition into SUP surfing.
The water visibility in Fuerteventura is exceptional — on calm days you can look straight through 4–5 metres of water to the sandy bottom, watching fish, rays, and occasional sea turtles beneath your board. This alone makes SUP here a remarkable experience.
Best SUP Spots
Corralejo Harbour: The sheltered water inside the harbour is the perfect learning environment — flat, calm, and completely protected from wind and swell. Multiple operators set up here for beginner sessions and equipment hire. The harbour has the additional charm of watching the ferries come and go and the colourful fishing boats bobbing beside you.
El Cotillo Lagoons: The natural rock-pool lagoons north of El Cotillo village are magical for SUP. The clear, shallow water, sheltered from the ocean by volcanic rock formations, is utterly calm — perfect for yoga SUP sessions, gentle paddling, and snorkelling from the board. The surrounding scenery — volcanic rock, white sand, turquoise water — is as beautiful as anywhere in the Canary Islands.
Corralejo Coastal Route: For intermediate paddlers, the route south from Corralejo harbour along the coast towards the dunes is exceptional. You'll pass rocky headlands, small secluded beaches inaccessible by land, sea caves, and snorkelling spots. Most guided tours cover this route — 2–3 hours, suitable for anyone who can balance on a board.
Lobos Island: Several operators run SUP excursions across the narrow channel from Corralejo to Lobos Island — a memorable experience, though the crossing requires reasonable fitness and some experience as conditions can be choppy. The reward is paddling around a completely uninhabited island in crystal-clear water.
SUP Tours & Guided Sessions
Guided SUP tours are the best way to explore the Corralejo coastline, discover spots you'd never find independently, and learn SUP skills in a supported environment. Tours typically depart at dawn (spectacular light, calm conditions) or late afternoon (beautiful golden-hour light on the water). Expect to pay €35–€55 per person for a 2-hour guided coastal tour including equipment.
Equipment Hire
Boards and paddles are available for hire at multiple points in Corralejo — hourly hire (€15–€20/hour) is ideal for a spontaneous session; daily hire (€40–€60) suits those wanting to explore independently. Leashes are mandatory for safety and are included in all hire packages. Wetsuits can be added for those who feel the water is cool (the water temperature is 18–24°C — a rash vest is often sufficient in summer).
SUP Yoga
A growing speciality in Fuerteventura — yoga classes conducted on SUP boards in the calm harbour or lagoon water. The instability of the board adds a balance challenge that deepens the yoga practice. Usually takes place at sunrise with small groups. A genuinely special experience. Several studios in Corralejo offer weekly sessions.
