Fuerteventura's Climate at a Glance
Fuerteventura has one of the most reliable and pleasant climates of anywhere in Europe, largely because of its position between the cooling influence of the Canary Current (a cold ocean current bringing cool water from the north) and the warming influence of its latitude and proximity to Africa. The result is a semi-arid climate with minimal seasonal variation — warm winters, warm summers, and very little rain.
Average annual sunshine: 3,000+ hours (more than the Spanish mainland). Average annual rainfall: 150mm (mostly November–February). Sea temperature: 18–24°C year-round.
Month by Month
January & February: Temperatures 18–22°C. The coolest months, but still remarkably mild — this is beach weather compared to northern Europe. Some rainy spells possible, but typically brief. Very low prices; quiet beaches; a wonderful time to visit if you want space and calm.
March & April: Temperatures 19–24°C. Spring arrives early in Fuerteventura — by March the days are long, warm, and largely sunny. Wildflowers appear in the volcanic interior. Excellent conditions for all activities. Growing in popularity but still not peak season.
May & June: Temperatures 22–27°C. Pre-summer sweet spot. The trade winds are building (ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing). Long, sunny days. Sea warm enough for comfortable swimming. Prices lower than July–August. Highly recommended for active holidays.
July & August: Temperatures 26–32°C (occasionally 38–40°C during Calima events). Peak season. Strongest trade winds — 25–35 knots at Flag Beach is common. Extremely busy; highest prices. Book accommodation and car hire well in advance. Still a great time to visit if you like heat and water sports.
September & October: Temperatures 24–28°C. The trade winds begin to ease and the swell season approaches. Ocean temperatures at their warmest (23–24°C). Often considered the best all-round months — warm, slightly less windy than August, first autumn swells for surfers. Prices falling from peak.
November & December: Temperatures 20–24°C. First Atlantic swells arrive. Some rain possible — November is the wettest month (though still drier than an English summer). Snorkelling and diving excellent. Prices low. A wonderful alternative Christmas destination.
Wind: The Key Variable
Fuerteventura is uniquely defined by its wind. The north-east trade winds (alisios) blow with remarkable consistency from May through October, making the island a paradise for wind sports but occasionally disruptive for beach relaxation if you're positioned in an exposed location.
Best strategies: For beach holidays, use the western and southern beaches in summer — they're naturally sheltered from the north-east trades. The El Cotillo lagoons, west-facing Jandia beaches, and the sheltered bay at Caleta de Fuste all offer calmer conditions. For wind sports, seek out Flag Beach, Sotavento, or the exposed north coast spots.

- Surfing: October–March for best swell; summer for small, clean beginner waves
- Diving: Year-round; September–November best visibility
